Car thieves tried to hide from the bird in the sky

On 3/19/22, around 9:52 pm, officers responded to a carjacking at the location of 3850 Campbellton Rd SW. Upon arrival, officers met with the victim, an elderly male by the name of Eddie Thomas. Mr. Thomas explained he was attempting to put gas in his vehicle when two armed suspects approached him and demanded his vehicle.

Mr. Thomas explained one of the armed suspect’s threatened him and told him not to call for help until they left the scene. The suspects then fled in Mr. Thomas’s car Eastbound towards Arthur B. Langford Parkway.
An officer was nearby on an unrelated call when he suddenly noticed the suspect vehicle driving past him.

The officer was able to get behind the carjacked vehicle and verify its coordinates and occupants with dispatch. The suspect vehicle took off at a high rate of speed and officers were unable to keep up. Officers requested the APD Air unit to assist on locating the vehicle.

Phoenix responded to the scene and once airborne, quickly observed both suspects had abandoned the stolen auto, and fled on foot. Phoenix continued air surveillance was able to locate the suspects laying down prone in a dense wooded area.

The Air Unit team was able to provide the coordinates of the suspects to patrol officers and the K-9 units which allowed them to locate and successfully detain both men without incident. When the APD Air Unit and our patrol officers team up, suspects should just give up. But too many take their chances and end up just like these two, in metal bracelets, under arrest and in jail. Job well done to all involved!
