LASD release surveillance video of a shooting when he pointed a black baseball cap towards deputies

On August 26, 2021, at approximately 4:10 pm, Operation Safe Streets detectives were conducting surveillance of a location for 28-year-old Kevin Hernandez who was wanted in connection with a recent murder in the East Los Angeles area. The team of plain clothes detectives observed Hernandez exit the location and enter the front passenger seat of a vehicle driven by a female Hispanic adult.

Detectives followed the vehicle for a short distance, and uniformed deputies in a marked patrol vehicle conducted a traffic stop on Soto Street just north of Washington Boulevard. The vehicle yielded, and deputies gave commands for Hernandez to exit the vehicle with his hands in the air. Hernandez exited the vehicle with his hands in the air, but immediately ran eastbound through a parking lot and dirt field.

Detectives followed Hernandez on foot, and while doing so, Hernandez turned toward the detectives several times and pointed a black object at them, which they believed was a firearm. Hernandez rounded a corner and continued running next to a set of train tracks. As one of the detectives chased Hernandez around the corner, Hernandez pointed what was believed to be a firearm at the detective, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.

Hernandez was struck by gunfire and immediately fell to the ground. Detectives approached him and were able to detain him without further incident. Hernandez was treated at the scene by Los Angeles City Fire Department paramedics.

Hernandez was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where he received medical treatment for non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

There were no other persons injured in the incident.

The black object the detectives observed Hernandez pointing at them was determined to be a black baseball style cap.

A loaded Hi-Point 9mm semiautomatic handgun was recovered from inside the vehicle Hernandez was riding in.
