Jacksonville Sheriff's Office charges one of its own after suspect beaten with Taser

A March 29 police chase that ended with the suspect being hit repeatedly in the head and face with a Taser has resulted in the arrest of a Jacksonville police officer and his resignation, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The incident involving Matthew Shane Alimurung, a five-year veteran, was caught on his bodycam and also shows an apparent attempt to spit on the suspect, Undersheriff Pat Ivey said Friday.

The now-former officer faces charges of aggravated battery and falsifying an official document, jail records show. The latter is because paperwork he filled out on use of force did not include the Taser incident, which was contradicted by his bodycam, Ivey said.

This was the 11th Sheriff's Office employee arrest this year, Ivey saying he wished it was zero, but "that's not reality."

"The process in which we review the termination point of a pursuit uncovered this," Ivey said. "We had employees who were there who gave their statements in regards to this. All that put together ends in this employee being held accountable."

The incident occurred after the suspect crashed a van during a chase, and a number of officers including Alimurung got to the wreck, Ivey said. The suspect had "severe lacerations" on his head and face after Alimurung, 32, apparently reached over other officers to use his Taser to hit him.

There is no indication that any other officer will face arrest, the undersheriff said.

"When the bodycam video comes out, you will see multiple officers engaged in this situation," he said. "Only one guy is being arrested for his behavior. Ninety percent are getting it right and one guy is not."
