Eureka police have released a dashcam video that shows the moment an officer’s car was struck and another officer on foot was hit by suspected car thieves Tuesday morning.

According to Lt. Michael Werges with Eureka Police Department. police were searching for a group of suspects who were allegedly tampering and stealing items out of cars around 5 a.m. in a subdivision on Mirasol Manor and Highway 109. When police got there, some suspects ran off while two drove off in a stolen Honda Pilot.

The Pilot was then spotted by police at the stoplight at Route 109 and 4th Street near a QuikTrip. Police said the suspects hit a Corvette as they attempted to drive away and when an officer tried to block them with a police car, the suspects rammed the police car. The suspects then drove around it, striking an officer on foot. Paramedics then took him to the hospital to be treated for a broken ankle.

According to Werges, the group of thieves first hit Pacific where they stole three vehicles before rifling through unlocked cars in the Marisol Manor subdivision south of Eureka, in Jefferson County. Chris Floyd told News 4 that thieves stole his silver, 2016 Ford F-150 pickup from his driveway around 5:30 a.m.

“A lot of anger, a lot of frustration. It was nearly paid off,” he said.

Two houses down from Floyd, a neighbor’s Nest surveillance camera recorded two of the thieves checking to see if a back door was unlocked. The thieves walked away after finding the door locked.

After a manhunt, Jefferson County Sheriff’s officers arrested two juvenile suspects and Eureka Police officers arrested the suspected driver of the stolen Honda Pilot. He’s believed to be 20 or 21-years-old. A fourth suspect got away.

“We do believe that it’s a local group that’s operating and has been hitting our area,” said Werges.

Investigators say they’ve been able to obtain a number of surveillance camera videos of the suspects.
