South Brunswick PD Search Smoke Filled Home For 79 Year Old

Two South Brunswick police officers entered a smoke-filled home on Sunday afternoon, to look for a 79-year-old resident who neighbors believed was still inside. The bodycam video of the incident was released by the South Brunswick police department.

On Sunday at 3 p.m., officers Bryan Garrison and Craig Cleffi responded to 16 Birch Street on reports of a fire in one of the homes at Monmouth Mobile Homes Park, Deputy Chief James Ryan said.

Neighbors saw the 79-year-old man's pickup truck outside and called for the police. When officers arrived they found neighbors using garden hoses and fire extinguishers to put the fire, Ryan said.

After no one responded to knocks on the doors, Garrison and Garrison had to kick in the door, Ryan said. The resident wasn't home at the time of the fire.

The Kendall Park Fire Junction, Monmouth Junction Fire Department and Kingston Fire Department responded, and the fire was brought under control in 20 minutes, Ryan said. No injuries were reported.

The home was damaged by fire and deemed uninhabitable. The 79-year-old man is currently staying with friends, Ryan said. The South Brunswick Fire Marshall is investigating the fire, which does not appear suspicious, Ryan said.
