Las Cruces Police Department body camera video shows pursuit, officer involved shooting

The Las Cruces Police Department released body camera video of an officer-involved shooting and police pursuit that took place on March 4.

Julian Valenzuela, 34, was arrested after he reportedly shot his wife at a home at the 700 block of Shannon Street.

Body camera video shows the moment an LCPD officer began chasing a car that matched the description of the vehicle Valenzuela was said to be driving.

In the video, you can hear the officer initiating a pursuit of the vehicle.

The officer then yells "He’s stopping... he’s got a gun."

The officer is seen on body camera video quickly getting out of the unit and beginning shooting his gun.

"He just shot at me three or four times," the officer yells in the video.

The officer then gets back in his vehicle and begins to drive as other LCPD units are seen rushing ahead of him.

Body camera video shows the officer pulling up to the intersection of University Avenue and South Espina Street where there was a crash involving a red Hyundai Elantra and a silver car.

Valenzuela drove through a red light and then ended up crashing into the other car, according to a news release from the State of New Mexico Office of the Third Judicial District Attorney Gerald M. Byers.

The officer and other officers are seen in the body camera video getting out of their cars and pointing guns at the red vehicle.

The officer yells "Show your f*****g hands" and other officers also begin yelling for the driver to get out and show their hands.

Body camera video shows the driver's door of the red vehicle opening and the driver, later identified as Valenzuela, gets out on the ground.

The officer is then seen on video bringing a K-9 out of his unit and then releasing the dog toward Valenzuela.

The K-9 in the video is seen latching on to Valenzuela, and then other officers are seen rushing over to restrain Valenzuela.

The K-9 released its grip on Valenzuela's arm and police were able to take custody of Valenzuela, video shows.

At the end of the body camera video, the officer who was involved in the shooting described what happened to other officers.

“He shot at me three times at Gardner [Avenue] and I shot back," said the officer.

“I saw him at the car wash is when I first saw him, flipped around, just so we know we have the right area. He stopped right in front of the park around the bus stop got off, fired, I fired back," said the officer.

A small handgun and an empty magazine were found in the vehicle as well as empty bottles of beer, according to the news release from the State of New Mexico Office of the Third Judicial District Attorney Gerald M. Byers.

Valenzuela’s blood-alcohol level was between .08 and .09 when a breathalyzer test was administered, according to the news release.

Valenzuela is charged with attempted murder, 4 counts of abuse of a child (Does not Result in Death or Great Bodily Harm), shooting at or from a motor vehicle, aggravated assault upon a peace officer (Deadly Weapon), aggravated fleeing a law enforcement officer, driving while intoxicated.

Valenzuela’s wife was flown to University Medical Center in critical condition, according to investigators.

Neighbors told police that they heard gunshots and saw Valenzuela exiting the home, pointing a gun, and shooting at a woman and her child before leaving the scene, according to a news release from the State of New Mexico Office of the Third Judicial District Attorney Gerald M. Byers.

When police arrived, Valenzuela's wife allegedly provided a description of her husband and the vehicle he may be driving.

Valenzuela remains at the Doña Ana County Detention Center.

His trial is set to begin on July 18, according to court records.
