Smith Rock, Oregon, is the American birthplace for rock climbing. The six hundred foot cliffs offer some of the world's most challenging climbs. There are over 1000 fixed climbing routes for all levels of climbers. The rock is volcanic basalt, more specific, welded tuff with compressed volcanic ash that is some 30 million years old. With numerous hiking routes and abundant wildlife, there's something for everyone. Parking can be a challenge, especially on weekends. It's a spot worthwhile visiting if you're in the Bend, Oregon area.
