The Bakersfield Police Department released a video and a full description Wednesday of a shooting last month that officials said officers were forced to shoot at a suspect, killing the man in an officer-involved shooting. The suspect pulled out a weapon and shot at an officer prior to his death.

Jesus Javier Aleman, 33, of Shafter was identified as the suspect later by the coroner.

The incident began around 12:20 a.m. April 20 near Planz Road and South H Street. Officers tried to pull over Aleman driving a maroon Chevrolet Tahoe in the area.

Aleman did not yield to officers and led them on a short pursuit, losing control and hit a pole on the south side of the 1600 block of Planz Road. Two people ran from the vehicle. The driver was captured.

The passenger, Aleman, was chased by officers. During the pursuit, Aleman pulled out a gun and shot at the officer, according to police.

The officer fired back and struck Aleman, killing him.

"Our commitment to community trust requires openness and transparency in all matters, especially the use of deadly force by a police officer. While this investigation has moved to a point where it is practical to release this information, the matter is still under review," the department said in statement. "The involved officers remain on modified duty pending a determination by the Chief of Police as to the appropriateness of their actions under state law and department policy."

Chief of Police Greg Terry said in a statement, “The public has a legitimate interest in obtaining timely and accurate information about police shootings, and the Bakersfield Police Department is committed to making that information available. We will release the body worn camera footage of officers in critical incidents as soon as it is possible to do so without compromising an investigation. This is our commitment to accountability and professionalism.”
