Beethoven Piano Sonata no. 14 in C-sharp minor 'Moonlight Sonata', Op. 27 No. 2 I. Adagio sostenuto
Performed by Paul Pitman

The Moonlight Sonata Op. 27, no. 2 was published in 1802 under the title Sonata quasi una Fantasia. Dedicated to Countess Guicciardi.

The nickname "Moonlight Sonata" came about five years after Ludwig van Beethoven's death. In 1832 Ludwig Rellstab, poet and German music critic, released a sentiment that the sonata's first movement was comparable to the moonlight's reflection shining upon Lake Lucerne.

Beethoven included the phrase sonata quasi una fantasia “sonata in the manner of a fantasy” in the title partly because the work does not follow the traditional sonata pattern. Most classical sonata's first movement is fast, second movement slow and third movement fast. Whereas Moonlight Sonata the first movement is slow (Adagio sostenuto), second movement is faster (Allegretto) and the third movement is even faster (Presto agitato) . This video only includes the first movement, Adagio sostenuto.

This piece has been converted to A432hz.
The A above middle C note serves as a general tuning standard for musical pitch. During the classical period (1730-1820) instruments were tuned to A430hz.
