Alert neighbor helps police bust mail fraud ring; suspects arrested at Blue Ash motel

An alleged check forgery operation was thwarted by a vigilant Blue Ash woman who was fed up with fraudsters.

Police say this might have been part of a larger operation, but they still need to gather more evidence and exercise more warrants on things like cell phones and computers.

“Hands out of your pockets! Hands in the air!” screamed a police officer. The video from a body cam released Tuesday by Blue Ash Police. “Walk out here now! Keep coming! Get down on the ground! Face down! Down on the ground! You got to start listening, dude!”

The scary moments happened Monday afternoon as police raided a room at the Red Roof Inn in Blue Ash.

“They were a little shocked that we were there, I think,” said Lt. Robert Gerhardt with the Blue Ash Police Department.

Gerhardt says police were alerted to the location by a woman from a nearby neighborhood who saw two men in a car earlier in the day rummaging through her mailbox.

“It was close to noon,” Carol Caudill said. She is the alert neighbor who says she had noticed the same car in the past in her neighborhood, and she had recently mailed several checks that never made it to their destinations. So, she cautiously approached.

“I was actually very close to the car before he realized I was there. I think the driver probably saw me first. The gentleman who was in my mailbox, he just put the door back up, he receded back into the car and they casually just pulled away.”

But not before she was able to get the license plate number and call police. The police found the suspect's car at Red Roof Inn. They arrested five people in total and seized blank check paper, printers, computers and a handgun.
