Prepping for Propane: heat, water, cooking, even electricity

Propane advantages are that it keeps indefinitely. It's portable. And it can be used for heating your house, your water, cooking your food, drying your clothing, even for producing electricity if you have a propane generator.

So while most of the world is breathing a sigh of relief that they don't need to worry so much about propane supply and cost as the summer is approaching, I urge you to remember that winter is approaching, too, and I see no reason this winter will be any better for propane prices and will in all likelihood be much worse.

If you look for a used tank, be sure you know what to look for to ensure it is a good tank. Our propane company will not even touch a tank that is older than 1980. Your supplier may have a different standard. Now is also the time to shop around again for pricing.

There are two major companies that deliver to my neighborhood. Our last price was $3.60/gallon, while the other company was charging over $7.00/gallon. @Alaska Prepper reported that his delivery company wanted over $9/gallon. His solution was to purchase more portable 100 gallon tanks and take them to the propane source to save the delivery fee.

I'll also suggest that you diversify your heating solutions. Consider installing a wood stove or a pellet stove. Pellets are more convenient and more efficient, but because they are more processed supply may be an issue whereas your standard wood stove can take nearly anything that'll burn. Plug-in electric heaters are also good to have on hand.

We are also looking to increase our solar capacity this summer and add battery backup, so using electric heat will be a great way to use up that capacity at no extra charge and save the propane for emergencies and things we can't not use propane for.
