Russia Can't Tame Gripen E: The Best Fighter On Earth

The Swedish Gripen may well be the most capable single-engine 4th generation fighter. It is fast, reliable and easy for Swedish conscripts to service and maintain. Here's what's important to know about Saab's state-of-the-art fighter aircraft.

The Swedish government became interested in a replacement for the older Draken and Viggen fighters. While both platforms were highly innovative for their time, the Viggen was one of the first widely successful delta-wing fighters and the Draken one of the first to feature a canard control surface in the 1980s, both of which have progressed rapidly.

To replace it, Stockholm wanted an all-in-one fighter, capable of winning aerial battles, striking targets in record time, and as a reconnaissance and surveillance platform. Enter Gripen.

Sweden for the Griffon, the Gripen rely on the delta wing and the canard control surface for control. The relaxed stability of the fuselage makes it a highly maneuverable fighter jet. The Gripen's top speed with afterburner is Mach 2, or twice the speed of sound, the aircraft can supercruise at Mach 1.1 without using the fuel-hungry afterburners.

One of the Gripen's strengths is its short takeoff capability, afforded by the aircraft's relatively large wing area. As part of Sweden's Bas 90 defense policy, emphasis was placed on decentralized command and widely dispersed military resources throughout the country. To that end, the Gripen can land or take off from short lanes of roads distributed across the country if necessary.
