Lava Island Falls is a short drive from Bend, Oregon. The falls are situated on the Deschutes River, drops some 40 feet in a 1/4 mile, generating Class 5 Rapids. The rapids are potentially dangerous so only the skilled kayakers or rafters should attempted this section of the river. Today's landscape began taking shape about 100,000 years ago. Two Lava Flows came through the area causing the Deschutes River to alter its course. The river was set to carve a new course, cutting through the less resistant rock and leaving behind a series of falls, rapids and pools.
