Andre the Giant suffered from the hormonal condition acromegaly, which causes the release of too much growth hormone, resulting in gigantism in Andre's case. In the 1970s and 1980s, Andre's size helped him dominate the sport of wrestling. He made a fortune, became famous around the world, and had crossover success in the film The Princess Bride. Andre fought Hulk Hogan in Wrestlemania III in 1987, near the twilight of his career. Andre died in his native France at the age of 46.
