AFP journalists at the scene said the huge factory was engulfed in flames that spread to nearby trees, adding that the building was surrounded by fire trucks and several ambulances. .

The fire like hell spread over an area of​​about 10,000 square meters (107,640 square feet) and a large part of the roof had collapsed, columns of black smoke spread for square kilometers and covered a corner of the city.

As night fell, nearly 350 firefighters were still battling the blaze, with reinforcements from army firefighting helicopters.

The fire broke out around 1:30 pm on May 22 and the cause is still under investigation by authorities in Saint Petersburg.

This factory was set up as a production base by a textile company, and many historical Russian heritage sites here have been destroyed by the fire.
