The story of Reog Ponorogo begins with King Kelana Suwandana who wants to propose to the daughter of the Kingdom of Kediri. The daughter's name is Dewi Ragil Kuning or Putri Sanggalangit. When traveling to propose to the princess, the king of Kediri named Singabarong. The presence of the King of Kediri was accompanied by an army, consisting of lions and peacocks. Meanwhile, King Kelana travels with his deputy, Bujanganom and the king's bodyguards called warok. The king's guards have the power of black magic that kills opponents. The appearance of the warok wearing black pants and shirts. Warok carried whips and whips. The two royal camps then fought each other to issue supernatural powers. After days of fighting, finally the King of Kediri and Bantarangin made peace with each other. King Bantarangin then proposed to his daughter Dewi Ragil Kuning. The war that took place between the peacock and the lion against the warok later became an art show. It could be said, Reog Ponorogo is an art that tells the war between the Kingdom of Kediri and the Kingdom of Bantarangin. Modern Reog Ponorogo is usually performed in several events, such as weddings, circumcisions, and national holidays. The performance consists of several series, namely two to three opening dances. The first dance is usually performed by 6–8 men dressed in all black, with their faces painted in red. The dancers depict the figure of a brave lion. Next is a dance performed by 6–8 girls on horseback. This dance is Mul, the Jaran Kepang or Jathilan dance, which must be distinguished from other dance arts, namely the Kuda Lumping dance.
