Edwin Smith Papyrus

Our earliest proof of cancer started with Edwin Smith. He was an American dealer and collector of antiques. In 1862 he bought a 15-foot-long papyrus from an antique seller in Luxor, Egypt. This papyrus had yellow pages filled with Egyptian script.

This papyrus was a manuscript dating back to 2,500 BC and contained the collected teaching of Imhotep. He was a great Egyptian physician who lived around 2,625 BC. In this document, Imhotep described 48 cases. And this document is the first mention of cancer in history. Imhotep described one patient with breast cancer.

Atossa, Chiribaya Tribe & Alexandrian Catacombs

The next time we heard about cancer in history was 2000 years later. In around 440 BC, the Greek historian, Herodotus, wrote the history of Atossa. Atossa was the queen of Persia and the daughter of Cyrus. One day Atossa noticed a bleeding lump in her breast, and her doctors tried to treat her, but they had no success.

The paleopathologist, Arthur Aufderheide, found a thousand-year-old gravesite at the Southern tip of Peru. The graves contained the mummified remains of the Chiribaya tribe. So in 1990, Arthur discovered a large gravesite containing about 140 bodies.

The dry climate conserved the bodies for mummification. At the Chiribaya site, one mummy was of a young woman in her mid-thirties. She sat with her feet curled up in a clay grave. When Arthur examined her, he found a hard mass in her left upper arm.

There are also other cases of cancers discovered in mummies around the world. The oldest found abdominal cancer comes from Dakhleh in Egypt from about 400 A.D. Some skeletons had tiny holes created by cancer in the skull or the shoulders. So the tumors were either skin or breast cancer.

In 1914, an archeologist team found a 2000-year-old Egyptian mummy in the
Alexandrian catacombs. They found a tumor invading the pelvic bone of one mummy.

Hippocrates

The first word for cancer was created around 400 B.C by Hippocrates. It's the first time we can find cancer in the medical literature. Cancer comes from the Greek word for "crab" or " karkinos."

The word oncology comes from another Greek word, namely "onkos .Onkos was the Greek term for a mass, load, or burden. Hippocrates believed that our bodies had four primary fluids called humors. So these four fluids were blood, black bile, yellow bile, and phlegm.

Hippocrates believed that these four fluids were in perfect balance in a healthy body. So if you had a disease, it was due to the excess of one fluid. Claudius Galen was another doctor that shared Hippocrates' view of medicine.

Toxic Lifestyle And Cancer

Cancer has increased in industrialized nations during the 20th century. The early history of cancer shows almost no signs of cancer. Our most common cancer killers, such as breast-, lung-, and prostate cancer, were almost absent in history.

The most probable reason why we have more cancer today is our lifestyle. If we look around the world today, we have a lot more stress in our society.

We also consume more toxic junk food and GMOs and get exposed to fluoride in our water. Every day, we breathe in poisonous car smog and get exposed to heavy metals.

Obesity Causes Cancer

Another reason why we have more cancer today is that we consume more animal products than our ancestors. Obesity and severe obesity have become more common in the United States in recent years. If you're overweight, you have a greater chance of getting cancer.
