We don’t think trail food has to be boring. This one never fails to delight whether with a group or a solo outing, it’s hard to beat that sentimental sensation and smells of panned popped popcorn.

Dragoon Corn

Prep Time: 5 minutes.
Cook Time: 12 minutes, but no need to rush.
Clean Up: 2 minutes.

Ingredients:
- 4 teaspoons of natural popping corn.
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil.
(You can adjust as required for your pot)
- OPTIONAL: Flavorings. Use your imagination, salt, leftover Raman flavoring, we love sriracha salt)

- 12” x 12” pieces of aluminum foil.

Total Cost: About $0.50

Home Prep:
Measure and pour four teaspoons
of popcorn into a ziplock bag. Measure and pour a 2 tablespoons of olive olive oil into a ziplock bag (you’ll only need about half of that, but you won’t get all of it out of the bag).

Preparation:
✅ The trick to this is creating a barrier between your lightweight cooking pot and the heat to prevent the popcorn from burning. You’ll do this by making a popping bag inside your pot and leaving an air space between your popcorn and the bottom on the pan. You can use one sheet of aluminum foil, but we recommend two to prevent oil dripping into your pot in case of any small holes in the foil.
✅ Use your fist, cup, or other smaller container to create a cooking “pot” slightly smaller than your cooking pot. BE VERY CAREFUL not to tear the foil or put holes in it or you will get oil (and the smoke associated with it) into the bottom of your cooking pot. Carefully slide the foil into your pot and fold the excess around the outside.
✅ Light your stove and set it to high heat.
✅ Pour a tablespoon on olive oil into your foil, place one kernel of corn into the corn, cover and place on your stove. Wait until you hear the kernel pop. This will tell you the oil is hot enough for popping. Be patient, this will take between 3-5 minutes. Listen carefully!
✅ When you hear the first kernel pop, pour the remaining corn into the pot, cover and wait. Within about two minutes you should start hearing the corn pop at a more rapid rate. About fifteen seconds after the corn starts popping rapidly lift and shake your pot to ensure all the corn gets popped. Wait until the popping slows to about one every three seconds, then remove from the stove.
✅ Turn off stove and let your popcorn cool for about thirty seconds before removing the lid.
✅ Enjoy straight from the foil container you made (careful it’ll be hot) or pour into your camp cup if desired for easy clean up.
✅ Use flavoring as desired.

Clean Up: Wad the aluminum foil and any remaining popcorn up, slide into your ziplock bag. Wipe your cooking pot clean and you’re done!

Bon Appetite!!!
