Every once in a while my Ryobi 18V battery won't charge and throw the charger into a fault cycle. This is troublesome, and many will suspect a faulty batter or charger. Do not despair, the solution is simple.

My batteries spent a lot of time in my work truck and on the job site, they get dirty, wet, and get used frequently. The battery connection, especially with the older batteries with the waffle/crosshatch pattern on the contacts, collect dirt and grime easily.

A little WD-40, or other cleaning agent, cleans these contacts and after placing the batter back on the charger, it begins to charge immediately! Simple fix! Check it out!
