‘I was squatting in the cellar, covering my ears because I was scared. It was really scary’ - an Ilovaysk resident told us about the battle of Ilovaysk in the summer of 2014.

According to the DNR militia’s plans, the troops sent by Kiev were supposed to get into the so-called ‘Ilovaysk cauldron’. The Ukrainian armed forces actively used heavy weapons without changing their tactics. Still, they never succeeded in taking the central part of the city, where the militia’s main headquarters was located.
