Pac-Man 99 (Switch) - Launch Day Battles (4/7/21)

First there was Tetris 99. Then there was Super Mario Bros. 35 (R.I.P.). And now, Bandai Namco has made their own retro gaming-based battle royale game! In honor of Pac-Man's 40th anniversary, Bandai Namco presents...Pac-Man 99!

This game plays just like the arcade classic Pac-Man where you navigate a maze eating dots and avoiding ghosts, but it also borrows the enemy transfer mechanic from Super Mario Bros. 35, except instead of sending over ghosts every time you eat one, you instead transfer a Jammer Pac-Man over to every enemy you're targeting. Jammer Pac-Men will either stand in one spot or later chase down your enemy, and if they make contact with the enemy, it will slow him down, allowing the ghosts more opportunity to kill him. You can get rid of the Jammers by eating a Power Pellet. However, later on, you can send over red Jammers which will instantly kill your enemy upon contact. The red ones move slower when they do move, but unlike the white Jammers, the red ones are only stunned by Power Pellets, so you still have to plan your route through the maze around them. The red ones can only be eliminated by eating the fruit in the middle of the maze when it appears.

Another mechanic is the ability to upgrade your Pac-Man's speed by eating every single dot in the maze before you eat the fruit and move on to the next round. As the round increases, the ghosts become faster and the Power Pellet duration becomes shorter, so those speed upgrades will really come in handy!

There are also sleeping ghosts on either side of the maze. Run over them to wake them up and create a ghost train to send over lots of Jammers to your enemies!

While Tetris 99 and Super Mario Bros. 35 only had four targeting strategies, Pac-Man 99 has eight: four abilities to make Pac-Man stronger in exchange for shorter Power Pellet duration, and four options of players to target like in the other two games.

After the first day, my first impressions are that this game definitely goes by faster than Tetris 99 or Mario 35, and I feel there there are more layers of strategy to this one. I'm digging it! Like Tetris 99, Pac-Man 99 is free for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, with optional paid DLC including single-player modes and extra themes (some based on other Namco classics).
