This is part one of three on the history of the Northern State Hospital in Sedro-Wooley Washington.

Desolation decay and distress is all that is found today at the abandoned northern state hospital also known as the bug house. A hospital prison for the harmless insane on over 1 000 acres of land designed by the same man who designed central park in New York opened in 1911. This was once a self-sustaining prison hospital for mental patients that included truly mentally unstable people but also alcoholics, epileptics, social non-conformists and menopausal women. Most patients were forced to work on the farm and dairy but many also did carpentry, shoe repair and printing.
