Fort Nisqually

This is a brief history on Fort Nisqually originally located in Dupont Washington.
Fort Nisqually was built due to safety concerns after numerous attacks and murders between Fort Vancouver and Fort Langley. Fort Nisqually was built and operated by the English Hudson Bay Company before Washington was a state or even an American territory. All kinds of people worked at the fort including French Canadians, Hawaiians, English of course, Americans, Scottish and Native Americans. The Fort mostly produced fur pelts but also sold livestock to Russian Alaska, The Kingdom of Hawaii and Alta California. Eventually the Oregon treaty was signed and Fort Nisqually found itself upon American soil in 1846 and by the mid-1860s the English decided to close up shop because of the increase in Americans. An Englishman who worked there at the time of closing quickly became an American citizen and claimed the fort for himself to be a homestead. Part of the new deal by FDR was to rebuild the fort as a museum in Tacoma, which I highly recommend visiting.
