This is a brief history of the Snoqualmie hydroelectric powerhouse. The history of the Snoqualmie powerhouse pretty much began because of the panic of 1893. An engineer named Charles Baker found himself without a job and saw an opportunity in Snoqualmie to create a hydroelectric plant like Niagara Falls. He didn't have enough money for such a project and so he got his dad William to cough up some big money and they created the Snoqualmie Falls Power Company and then bought the falls and a ton of land around it. Construction began in 1898. The plant was built underground in the rock behind the falls, a first of its kind. And by mid 1899 Seattle was getting some of its electricity from Snoqualmie. By 1903 William had died and Charles fell on hard times losing stake in his plant, it was bought by Seattle Electric who then five years later sold it to Seattle Tacoma Power who added the second plant below the falls eventually ownership of the plant became Puget Sound Power in 1997
