F-15EX: Heading for Crash Landing

Fifty years ago, the first variant of the F-15 made its debut. Designed with “not a pound for air-to-ground,” the F-15 is a superior fourth-generation fighter. While the original variant was specifically suited for the air superiority role, the F-15E “Strike Eagle,” capable of performing air-to-ground missions, was released in 1988.

The E-variant is a capable air-to-air fighter. , but has a more diverse mission profile, which includes the ability to carry out ground attacks. Today, a new variant, the F-15EX is "ready now" according to Boeing.

Upgrade Fighter

The F-15EX made its first flight in February 2021. A month later, the US Air Force took delivery of its first F-15EX – marking the first USAF F-15 delivery in 17 years. The F-15EX was developed quietly, after the USAF secretly inquired with Boeing about developing a new airframe with several specific requirements: cheap to operate, cheap to acquire, low risk, and not disruptive to F-35 procurement.

Boeing's solution was an update to the classic F-15 airframe, later in its fourth decade of service – a rather bold decision considering the USAF had not purchased a fourth-generation fighter since 2001. The result of Boeing's efforts was the F-15EX.

Unlike the fifth-generation airframe that now dominates USAF procurement, the F-15EX lacks stealth capabilities.
