Ukraine forces blow up bridge to thwart Russian advance in east.
Ukraine's National Guard released a video showing the moment of explosion on a bridge connecting Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk to Rubizhne in the Luhansk region. The video, which was released on Wednesday (May 18), was said to show a joint special operation between Ukraine's security forces fighting to slow down the advance of Russian troops in the Luhansk region. The location of the video was verified by roads and scenery which matched satellite pictures. Ukraine's defense ministry has predicted many weeks of grinding fighting ahead in the east of the country. Britain said on Friday (May 13) that Ukraine had stopped Russian forces crossing the Siverskyi Donets river west of Sievierodonetsk. The Kremlin calls its Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine a "special military operation" to demilitarise a neighbor threatening its security. Ukraine says it poses no threat to Russia and that the deaths of thousands of civilians and destruction of cities and towns show Russia is waging a war of aggression.
