In Utilitarian (as opposed to Ethical) thought, the end always justifies the means. If the end, for instance, is obtaining a million dollars, the Utilitarian man will lie, cheat and steal to get it. The means don't matter to him, just the end. To the ethical man, the means are of the utmost importance. In many ways, neuroscience is now reverse-engineering ethics and coming to the same conclusion as ethicists came to thousands of years ago. See how what is now called "mental contrasting" is proving that, if someone wants to achieve their goals, concentrating on the means gets you there faster.
