Doctors at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical center in Vancouver have a new tool in their fight against afflictions of the lungs: a robot. The Ion robot, created by Intuitive Surgical, the same company to create the davinci surgical robot, is a thin, flexible node that can be inserted into the lungs of a person to identify nodules and potential cancerous regions. PeaceHealth is the only hospital in the pacific northwest to be operating the device, and plans to begin patient diagnosis with it in the first week of May. Dr. Bhanu Patibandla is a thoracic program director leading the robots implementation.
