BREAKING: Finnish President confirms NATO bid

May 15, 2022 Finnish President Sauli Niinisto confirms that Finland will apply for NATO membership to "maximise" the country's security, despite Vladimir Putin's warning that it would be a "mistake" to do so.

Mr Niinisto said: "This is a historic day. A new era begins."

The country is expected to submit a formal application to NATO headquarters in Brussels next week.
