Tunnels and Tassels

How many days from tassel to corn on the cob? Start counting! It's the last Sunday of June and the sweet corn has made the biggest change in the past week...although it is not nearly as tall as the giant elderberry plants. Blooms at 8 feet in the air could cause some real quandaries if the Japanese beetles arrive at their regularly scheduled invasion time...last week of June.

We have a different unpleasant problem to deal with right now...a groundhog burrowed under our new shed, busting up the paneling along the ground. On this property, there is an old bank barn, an old hog shed, and two old sheds. Groundhog chose our new shed! Grrrhhhh!! (To be fair, I think that is the direction the neighbor's dog chased him...) We set out a live trap but only caught our timid little female cat. The one who is so terrified of the Prima Donna mama cat "
Smoky" that she lives under the roof of the old shed now. I'd show you a video of her three kittens but we haven't tamed them yet and they launch themselves off the steps every time I aim the camera kitten-wards. But I digress...

Still no Rocket--hope he has a new family where he can live well-fed and in peace. Maybe he'll come back to visit sometime. I hope so...
