Setting Ambitious Goals and Accepting Limitations

I am very much a goal-driven person, and the feeling of checking something off my to-do list gives me great satisfaction. I also have a passion for learning and everything I do is treated as an opportunity to refine a skill or learn a new one. But I have a lot of interests and hobbies, and with a full-time job, a never-ending amount of work to do around the farm, and a wife and kids that deserve attention I have to prioritize tasks and sometimes things just don’t get done.

One of the tires on my John Deere mower has been going flat and up until now I’d just put air in it every week instead of fixing the problem. Now its three tires and I just can’t justify that anymore. But because that task doesn’t excite me and it doesn’t fit into my normal routine I’d pushed it off and cost myself more time in the long run. Likewise, the drive belt on the mower has been going out for two years, and I even bought the replacement part back in 2019, but I knew that task would take more time than what I wanted to give it so I put it off. I finally broke down and made the decision to send it to shop for repairs.

I am learning (there’s that word again) to accept that I can’t do it all. By allowing someone else to repair my equipment I can devote that time to other tasks at home that need attention too. And by fixing the flat tires I’ll save myself the time and headache of putting air in it every time the grass gets tall.
