The Eider River barrage
Eider barrage is located in the City of Tönning, Germany.
Before the Eider is released into the North Sea, it passes one of the largest coastal protection structures in Europe: the Eider barrage, which has now grown into a stream more than 200 meters wide. This structure is about five kilometers long in its entirety, five gates with a weight of 250 tons each regulate the flow of the tides today. In 1973, the plant went into operation after five years of construction.

Previously, the tides had a wide influence even into the deep inland. More than 200,000 people have died in storm surges in the history of the North Sea, today it has become safe due to the elaborate construction measures along the coast and right here, on the Eider. A visit to the viewing platform and the info pavilion is definitely worthwhile. Even hungry Eider explorers are not neglected, there is simple and delicious gastronomy. By the way, at this point the Eider is also a border river between Dtihmarschen in the south and North Frisia - just in the north.t iron tower is 40 meters high.
