What we discuss with Nina Schick:

🤯 What deepfakes are and how they’re created using technology that is getting exponentially more sophisticated every year and accessible to anyone.
🤯 How deepfakes go beyond novelty and into dangerous territory occupied by blackmailers, propagandists, terrorists, conspiracy theorists, and other unsavory ne’er-do-wells who profit by making the rest of us doubt what we can trust as reality.
🤯 Why deepfakes are so much more concerning than reality-bending manipulations of the past.
🤯 The potential positive uses of AI-assisted deepfake technology that will change our world as dramatically as the advent of the Internet.
🤯 How we can discern between real photo, video, or audio footage and imposter deepfakes to avoid being duped by 21st-century technoshysters.
🤯 And much more…

What are deepfakes, and why should they be a cause for concern beyond their novelty? Recently making the viral rounds is a series of TikTok videos seemingly presented by diminutive Hollywood blockbuster factory and infamous Scientology spokesman Tom Cruise. On the surface, it appears we’re catching a candid glimpse of Mr. Cruise’s personal life with a demonstration of his flawless golf swing, a presentation of his close-up magic prowess, and even a witty anecdote about time spent with glasnost granddaddy Mikhail Gorbachev. But in reality, these videos are the creation of Belgian VFX specialist Chris Ume, assisted by Tom Cruise impersonator Miles Fisher, the open source AI DeepFaceLab algorithm, and video editing tools. Sure, it took a lot of work by a professional to wind up with such convincing end results, but the technology is improving at such a rapid pace that it won’t be long before amateurs will be able to create equally credible videos to unleash upon the unsuspecting.

In a world where misinformation, disinformation, and straight-up lies can already be transmitted effortlessly across the world via social media memes by enemies of the state, impressively realistic deepfakes are just a more sophisticated instrument of propaganda propagation in the arsenal. In the wrong hands, this power could be abused to create false evidence in criminal trials, revenge pornography to ruin lives and careers of the innocent, and doctored front-line journalism by tabloid peddlers legally masquerading as legitimate news outlets.

On this episode, we talk to Deepfakes: The Coming Infocalypse author Nina Schick about how this technology is being used today, what we can expect from it in the future, and how we can discern between real video, photo, or audio footage and its deepfake imposters to avoid being duped and manipulated by the agendas of 21st-century technoshysters. Listen, learn, and enjoy!
