Sunday Longplay - From Below (NES Homebrew) - Tetris With a Twist!

This week on Sunday Longplay, I'm introducing a new type of game to this channel. I've played retro games, modern games, fan mods of retro games (ROM hacks), PC fan games, and now I'm playing my first console homebrew game on this channel. Released September 16, 2020, this is an NES homebrew game called "From Below", by Matt Hughson, and it's basically classic NES Tetris with a twist!

The twist to this game comes from the unique Kraken mechanic. The playing field resembles a castle, and after a while the Kraken will use its tentacle to invade the playing field and push your blocks further up creating more blocks in its way (which can actually help you since if you midsrop a piece the Kraken can fill in the holes), and clearing a line in a row where the Kraken tentacle is will drive it back.

There are three different modes of play. In Timed mode, the Kraken's interference will be time-based and will move up every few seconds. In Fixed mode, the Kraken will interfere after every single piece drop making this the hardest mode. In Classic mode, there is no interference from the Kraken, making this mode play just like classic NES Tetris.

The game may play basically like classic Tetris, but the mechanics have been tweaked to incorporate some modern Tetris mechanics as well, like hard drops, wall kicks, T-spins, lock delay, etc. With these new mechanics, level 29 is no longer a kill screen for NES Tetris players who don't know how to hypertap. However, if you eat level 29 for breakfast every morning, there is another new kill screen mechanic. Starting at level 30, an advancing indestructible wall of doom will start rising up from the bottom of the arena permanently blocking the bottom row, giving you less and less room to work with. This wall will rise up one row for each subsequent level. Also, the game supports scores over a million points with no Game Genie code required, for Tetris players who max out the score counter for a warmup.
