'Warthogs' return to Europe - Russia on full alert !

Ten Maryland Air National Guard A-10C Thunderbolt II jets arrived in Iceland on Thursday, the US Air Force Europe and Air Force Africa said in a statement on Friday.

Designed to destroy Soviet tanks during the Cold War, this iconic attack aircraft nicknamed for its hoarse cannon sound had to train in various parts of Europe.

They will support the US Army's Rapid Response, an exercise involving about 9,000 Allied troops scheduled to run through May 20.

The drills began this week alongside other drills involving the US military and its partners across Europe, with large troop concentrations in the Baltic and Black Sea regions. Exercises are meant to demonstrate rapid mobilization.

Four of the A-10s will fly from Iceland to Norway on Friday, while another six will fly to North Macedonia on Saturday to support drill operations, USAFE-AFAFRICA said.

The planes are also scheduled to stop in Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Poland to carry out what the US Air Force calls combat agile employment (ACE). This implies rapid deployment and operation of aircraft from more advanced locations.
