The 2010’s saw an explosion in Cuban baseball players risking much to potentially gain even more in America. Some of theses tales are well documented and often involve shadowy characters and rickety boats, dangerous travels and extortion of exorbitant sums.
The Legal exit of Yoan Moncada might be the most fascinating of all.

The 19 year old came of age as Cuban baseball players became commodities and Major League Baseball wanted to stockpile these commodities. He also represented a unique asset, younger than most of the other players but still playing while the National Series was considered near it’s apex.

Yoan Moncada is now a veteran MLB’er but at just 26 still has big upside entering his 5th season with the Chicago White Sox. His baseball career has been intriguing but how got there is even more intriguing.

Moncada made his debut for Cienfuegos of the Cuban National Series in 2012.[1] In his two years with Cienfuegos he hit .277/.388/.380 with four home runs and 21 stolen bases. Moncada left Cuba in June 2014 with permission of the Cuban government to pursue a career in Major League Baseball (MLB).[2][3] Before signing with the Red Sox, Moncada was a highly sought after Cuban free agent. He was seen as a generational, five-tool talent, being compared to the likes of Robinson Cano.[4]
