The gates are up and this field is finally ready for goats! This fence project has been ongoing for months and, like most things, it’s taken much longer to complete than we anticipated. We’re all so excited to have this done but we’re not stopping yet: with a garden to plant and baby goats coming in just a few weeks there’s no slowing down anytime soon. In a perfect world gates should be installed on level ground so there are no gaps underneath the gate. Goats are notorious escape artists and they’ll find any nook and cranny to wiggle through if green grass or fresh vegetables are on the other side of the fence. But we don’t live in a perfect world and because of the way our farm is laid out we needed to rob some square footage from our pasture to put in our garden and our orchard. Therefore, these gates are put in on a slight slope and there’s a small gap at underneath one gate. If you care to drop a suggestion on how to deal with that in the comments below we’re happy to hear it.

The goats are happy to have a great big pasture with fresh grasses and forbs where they can get their bellies full. There’s a lot more fence work to do but it must wait because Violet is expecting babies very soon and baby goats take precedence over just about everything!
