What do followers look for in a good lead ?

As a leader it is your job to protect the follow. People on the sideline see everything, so you want to be more protective in a crowded dance floor. When people see that you are safe to dance with, you get more dances.

I do believe that when surveying a dance floor people can recognize with someone is smiling politely, vs. actually and truly having an amazing time. A genuine smile vs a fake smile.

If a lead can make a follower truly smile and have fun, then hes probably a good lead.

Understand that as a lead when you are dancing you are visually showing everyone your dance resume. People on the sidelines are watching: your moves - are you leading an advanced move at the intro with a new dancer, or are you paying attention to musicality and trying out basic moves first to test the connection and her skill level?

Are you leading three double spins in a row? Does the follower look like she's anticipating and/or backleading? If so, how is the lead handling that? Is the lead paying attention to space? How's his frame? Is the follower compensating for a lack of frame by grabbing him?

Understand this: Followers DO talk about leads. A LOT. They talk about us in the bathroom, in group chats with their other follow friends, as well with their leader friends. they swoon over amazingly smooth and fun new dancers at a social and offer eager recommendations. And they also warn their friends of the leaders to avoid. Followers also understand that sometimes two of them can have different levels of success with the same leader. However, generally, a great lead gives clear, not jerky signals, and leaves very little open to confusion.
