Goat Birth ESSENTIALS – What’s in my Birth Kit?

We’re expecting baby goat kids any day now and I’ve prepared a birthing kit to make delivery as easy as possible for mom, kids, and me. This is Violet’s fourth kidding (she’s been a rock star mom the first three times) and we aren’t expecting any issues but it is always best to be over-prepared. This list is not all encompassing and what works for us might not work for you, but if you want to build a birth kit for your goats this should be a good starting point. Towels will help us dry the kids off when they’re born and will help in cleaning up after birth.

We will try to catch the kids on these puppy pads to make clean up just a little easier. We do our kidding in the barn which is not the cleanest environment. These will make the whole experience just a little more pleasant.

A small hair dryer will help us dry the kids and get them warmed up. Usually our plan is to kid in March or early April, but since Violet is kidding in May this time the hair dryer is not as critical in our part of the world.

A bottle and colostrum are necessary just in case the babies can’t nurse. Colostrum is very important for newborns so if the kids can’t nurse this will get them the nutrients they need.

Hand sanitizer and wet wipes will help me quickly clean myself just in case I need to assist in the birthing process. Usually we would have medical grade gloves but due to the current state of the world they are hard to come by.

Giving mom and kids a quick shot of Goat & Sheep Nutri-Drench after birth will help everyone get an energy boost and some nutrients that they need. This stuff is available at most farm stores.

A bulb syringe will allow us to clear mouths and nostrils after birth if necessary.

Adding some molasses to the water bowl after birth will entice mom to drink lots of water. Birth is hard work and she’ll need all the water she can get.

We have a banding gun in our birth kit, but this is really just because it’s the best place to store it. We won’t keep any bucklings (intact males) from this bunch and the banding gun is an easy way to wether the boys.
