70 percent of the Earth's surface is covered by water. It has around 1.35 billion cubic kilometers (324 million cubic miles) of water, accounting for roughly 97 percent of all water on the planet. The ocean is responsible for all life on Earth and gives the planet its blue hue when viewed from space. Earth is the only planet in our solar system where liquid water is known to exist.

Despite the fact that the ocean is one continuous body of water, it is split into four major divisions by oceanographers: the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Arctic Oceans. Around Antarctica, the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans converge into freezing waters. Some oceanographers consider it to be a fifth ocean, known as the Southern Ocean.
