Alfa Romeo is launching a new twist on an old classic, with an emphasis on the “twist.” It’s a Giulia Quadrifoglio sedan pumped up and lightened in a way it never has before, high enough for it to have earned the right to wear the historic “GTA” badge. The last time that name graced an Alfa was 1965. The Quadrofoglio’s 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 sits under the svelte hood, except this time it’s pushing 540 horsepower to the rear wheels only. This helps the vehicle get to 100 km/h from zero in just 3.6 seconds.

Under the wings and aggressive vents is a lightened chassis and drivetrain, which now weighs only 3,350 pounds thanks to a diet of carbon-fibre and aluminum — that’s 220 pounds less than the standard Quadrifoglio. To get the weight that low, the driveshaft, hood, roof, front bumper, front wheel arches and rear-wheel arch inserts have been replaced with carbon-fibre pieces. The side and rear window frames are even made out of Lexan, straight from the track.

If the Giulia GTA isn’t hardcore enough for you, Alfa Romeo will sell you a GTAm, which features carbon-fibre racing seats, a roll bar and six-point safety belts, as well as a front splitter and larger carbon-fibre rear wing. The wheels are 20-inch units and feature centre-locking hubs. An Akrapovic central exhaust system is integrated into the rear diffuser, while additional aerodynamics on the front fascia come via a Sauber Aerokit.

Only 500 Giulia GTA and GTAm examples will be built, and both are legal to drive on the street. Price varies depending on how the customer specifies their vehicle. Customers also receive a Bell helmet in special GTA livery; a full racing suit from Alpinestars; and a personalized Goodwool car cover for protecting their GTA or GTAm.
