Veteran Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Aqleh has been shot dead as she covered an Israeli raid on Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank.

Al Jazeera said Ms Abu Aqleh, 51, a prominent figure in the channel's Arabic news service was allegedly shot "deliberately" and "in cold blood," by Israeli troops.

But Naftali Bennett, the Israeli prime minister, said Ms Abu Aqleh was "likely" killed by Palestinian gunfire.

"According to the information we've gathered, it appears likely that armed Palestinians - who were indiscriminately firing at the time - were responsible for the unfortunate death of the journalist," Mr Bennett said in a statement.

The Israeli army confirmed it had conducted an operation early Wednesday in Jenin refugee camp, a stronghold of Palestinian armed groups in the northern West Bank.

It firmly denied, however, that it had deliberately targeted journalists.
