Amazing Grace was written by a slave trader. John Newton shackled human beings to the hulls of ships and sold them. But his story doesn’t end in evil.

On one of his voyages, his ship was caught in a terrible storm, and he thought he was going to die. In his desperation, he prayed for the first time in many years. He swore that if God saved his life, he would dedicate the rest of his life to Him. Miraculously, the ship jolted, and the cargo shifted to plug the water pouring into the ship.

The miracle doesn’t end there. John Newton’s life was transformed over the years that followed. He became not only a preacher, but also an abolitionist who fought to end slavery. He shed light on the inhumane treatment of his African brethren.

Few people understand the radical meaning of the song he wrote. It wasn’t a good person singing about how he got the good things he deserved. It’s a song from a wretched man who DIDN'T get the punishment he deserved. It shows that no matter how wicked you are, there is a way back to the light.

Will Sanders adapted this version of Amazing Grace so this generation would know exactly what John Newton was asking to be saved from, and how the grace of God ended the destruction of a human soul that was dedicated to the evils of slavery.

It’s also a direct message to racists:
You don’t have to be trapped in your hate.
There is a way out.
John Newton found it, and you can too.

Will Sanders edited this video based on the change from the openly racist world he grew up in.

In his school days, racism was overt, socially accepted, and common. He recounts hiding his high school relationships for fear of the trouble society would cause for the Black girls who were dating a White boy. In those days, few interracial relationships flourished because of the judgment and physical danger couples routinely faced.

This country has a breath of fresh air sweeping through, allowing interracial couples like Chris and Mayra (pictured in this video) to live in peace and safety.

Slowly but surely, this amazing grace is transforming the country. It’s a beautiful world when we acknowledge that all are equal in God’s heart.

This video was made with Lynda and Alisa in mind—two ladies who will best understand the meaning.
