A aurora polar é um fenômeno óptico composto de um brilho observado nos céus noturnos nas regiões polares, em decorrência do impacto de partículas de vento solar com a alta atmosfera da Terra, canalizadas pelo campo magnético terrestre.
Em latitudes do hemisfério norte é conhecida como aurora boreal (nome batizado por Galileu Galilei em 1619, em referência à deusa romana do amanhecer, Aurora, e Bóreas, deus grego, representante dos ventos nortes).
A ocorrência deste fenômeno depende da atividade das fulgurações solares. Em latitudes do hemisfério sul é conhecida como aurora austral, nome batizado por James Cook, uma referência direta ao fato de estar ao Sul.
O fenômeno não é exclusivo somente ao planeta Terra, sendo também observável em outros planetas do sistema solar como Júpiter, Saturno, Marte e Vênus.
Da mesma maneira, o fenômeno não é exclusivo da natureza, sendo também reproduzível artificialmente através de explosões nucleares ou em laboratório.

The polar dawn is an optical phenomenon composed of a glow observed in the night skies in the polar regions, due to the impact of solar wind particles with the Earth's high atmosphere, channeled by the Earth's magnetic field.
In northern hemisphere latitudes it is known as the northern lights (name baptized by Galileo Galilei in 1619, in reference to the Roman goddess of dawn, Aurora, and Boreas, Greek god, representative of the north winds).
The occurrence of this phenomenon depends on the activity of solar flares. In latitudes in the southern hemisphere it is known as aurora austral, name baptized by James Cook, a direct reference to the fact of being in the south.
The phenomenon is not only exclusive to planet Earth, but is also observable on other planets in the solar system such as Jupiter, Saturn, Mars and Venus.
Likewise, the phenomenon is not exclusive to nature, but is also artificially reproducible through nuclear explosions or in the laboratory.
