In making this video, I had a flashback to a life long ago, in a place further North, in a time of relative innocence.
Set the scene : Final orders were issued just before stand-to the previous evening, kit was inspected, admin was done, and brave faces made nervous jokes. One of the senior company NCO's sensed the tension and called an impromptu chat around a nearby Maroela tree, filling the men (most were barely out of boyhood,) with courage and pride and determination. Few slept that night and the air was electric with tense energy as ghostly shapes rose from their positions in the early hours. Silently, the columns moved out under cover of darkness, with only the moon to guide us. The scent of the African night was mixed with adrenaline filled perspiration, gun oil and nervously chewed Chappies. Final positions were taken after support teams split off to take up their posts, and then the wait began. It seemed like an age for the sun to rise out it's sleepy bed; we all convinced ourselves the shivering was a result of dew and sweat soaked clothes brushed upon by a cool pre-dawn breeze. Long before the sun could crest the horizon, our night accustomed eyes could make out the forms of the objective. Each member having drilled through their roles in the rehearsals, then finally the signal came and the quite morning lit up and exploded, .....and drill took over. With the objective taken, cleared and secured and with the smoke of battle and smell of cordite still hanging heavy on the cool morning air, I turned from the perimeter and looked back into the objective to see the HQ element coming through the mist with the proudly fluttering National flag sending every observer into an instant gratifying gooseflesh state. (Daardie Nugget gevoel) . I salute you all, my comrades, fallen, grey and aging. Your Country may wish to forget you, but you will never be forgotten!
