There are six contenders for the Conservative Party of Canada leadership

The Conservative party says six leadership candidates have cleared the final hurdles to getting their names on the ballot, while three others who did not make the cut are pushing back.Pierre Poilievre, the bombastic Tory finance critic whose rallies have at times drawn thousands, and Jean Charest, the former Quebec premier who is appealing to more centrist Conservatives, are both candidates in the race to replace former leader Erin O'Toole.So are Patrick Brown, the mayor of Brampton, Ont., who is promoting religious freedom and making targeted promises to ethnic communities, and Leslyn Lewis, the socially conservative rural Ontario MP.

Conservative leadership first official debate May 11 in Edmonton

Candidates vying to be the next leader of the Conservative Party of Canada will face off in the first party-sanctioned debate next Wednesday.The English-language debate on May 11 will be held in Edmonton and hosted by former political journalist Tom Clark, while the official French-language debate will take place in Laval, Que. on May 25.The party’s Leadership Election Organizing Committee (LEOC) stated in a memorandum that it is “reserving the rights to add a third debate in early August.”Topics will be sent out to candidates one week in advance of each debate. LEOC rules stipulate that candidates are required to attend all official debates.
