RV Stranded in Snowstorm on Oregon Mountain Top After Breakdown - Part 1

Hello again!

This video was filmed on 3/16/2021

This is some older footage of a local camping trip we took near Portland, OR. This was one of our "practice trips" that we took to help sort out the kinks in our rig. Sadly, even after this breakdown and more, after we thought we had everything sorted, we had even bigger problems as soon as we left for our big trip across country that you will get to see in upcoming videos!

Katrina and I had this trip planned to Tillamook National Forest for a few day long RV adventure. We ended up with far more than we had bargained for on this one though.

Our first trying moment happened as we headed up a forest road attempting to figure out which areas were passable for our giant trailer. We found ourselves on this ever narrowing road with increasing tensions as we realized we may not be able to pass through, or even have a good turn around for that matter. We started backing down this same road as the sunset and the light faded in search of a workable turn-around.

As this was happening, a fellow Boondocker in the area pulled up and asked if we needed any help... Boy do we! Haha

She told us we would likely be able to continue up the road and find ourselves a nice camping spot at the gravel lot a couple miles further up the road. We followed her advice and found the nice open, and even pretty level gravel lot as described.

Unfortunately, as soon as we pulled up and tried to find our perfect spot, I discovered that the truck would not move under it's own power and the tow haul light began flashing. Apparently we have a tow haul mode??

Katrina found out from Google that it was likely a transmission issue, and after some tinkering, she got it kinda working, although far from fixed as we found out after testing. Based on her reaction when it moved a little, you would think she had actually fixed the issue!

The next morning we woke up to the fact that we were now in a snow storm on this forested mountain top. Now with a broken truck, limited fuel and water, and 10 miles from a paved road, we were genuinely thinking potential survival mode. We have since taken up the policy of never move to a new camp area with less than ample water and fuel.

We easily settled in to our sketch situation and made the best of it goofing around, hiking, taking cool footage for this video, and making camp fires together.

We were making wagers about how far we could make it before the transmission would completely fail; about halfway back to our home is the answer... Our transmission failed entirely on the roadside right next to this large commercial farm, that after a call, allowed us to leave our trailer in their parking lot until we could return with a working truck to finish our journey homeward.
Oddly, they were hesitant, as it was not the first time people had asked to temporarily park their RV there, and never came back. WTF?
We assured them the last thing we wanna do is abandon our 9 months old trailer, and thanked them with a box of donuts for their trust in us when we returned.

We got a ride back home from Katrina's brother and his girlfriend, and the truck was brought to the shop for repair. Thanks guys!

We returned a couple weeks later after a long wait for repairs, and found our trailer safe and sound. We hooked up, and finished our drive back home without further issue.

Our pain is your gain!

Enjoy

We are Cody and Katrina, AKA Second Nature. We have been traveling the US in our 32’ 2018 Desert Fox 27fs toy hauler trailer since October 2020. A lot has happened since we left, and we hope you will come along for the ride!

When we first started on our trip a lot of chaos happened and we weren’t able to edit, so we’ve been working through our backlog of footage for a while. We plan to be caught up and current in the next few months. In the meantime, have fun watching our memories.
