Faith and Reason, Relationship between God and Man and Man and Neighbor

Today we read an article by Jonathan Molik, reconciling Faith and Reason, why it's important, as well as the relationships we have with our fellow man, and God. We look at writings by St. Thomas Aquinas and Pope Saint John Paul II for guidance on the question of whether faith and reason can coexist, finding the answer is that not only can they coexist, but are based on each other.Show more

Faith is based on the authority of God, while reason is based on the nature of things. Both are necessary for understanding the truth. Faith without reason can lead to error, and reason without faith can lead to heresy.

Faith and reason are both gifts from God. Reason enables us to understand the natural world, while faith gives us knowledge of the supernatural world.

We read that "reason is the light of faith." In other words, our reason is what allows us to understand and believe in the things of faith. It is not a matter of one being better than the other, but of each complementing the other. As Saint Augustine said, "Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe."
