I thought it was a snail eating fruit at first, pink eggs who knew?

An intrusive species is unleashing destruction for some Louisiana crayfish ranchers. LSU Ag Center Entomologist Blake Wilson said apple snail egg masses are being accounted for in upwards of six areas.

"They're stopping up a ton of the crayfish traps, eating the crayfish snare, and furthermore truly dialing a portion of these activities back cause now every catch must be figured out to eliminate dead snails," said Wilson.

Wilson said apple snails got their name since they can develop to be the size of an apple and their eggs are radiant pink and look like air pocket gum. He said in the egg stage, they emanate poisons and can disturb your skin.

While the species isn't incredibly broad across the state, Wilson said crayfish ranchers that have been assaulted with them are languishing.

"We've seen decreases in crayfish catch around half and sometimes, the ranchers recently quit fishing those lakes by and large," said Wilson.

Apple snails were acquainted with the Louisiana biological system back in 2016 when they were sold in pet stores for aquariums. Wilson said they accept once the snails arrived at standard size a few proprietors were perhaps overpowered.
