‘Hikikomori’ is a Japanese term for someone who has withdrawn from real life and retreated into voluntary isolation. It's one of those social issues often talked about in hushed tones (if it's brought up at all), often out of shame. There are unique characteristics to the condition in Japan, but turns out it it's not a uniquely Japanese issue. It is often referred to in psychology as "failure to launch syndrome" and "acute social withdrawal". In this video I discuss this heavy topic while analyzing two examples of media dealing with the subject - The anime series Welcome to the NHK and the role playing game OMORI - while trying to come to meaningful conclusions about the nature of the the condition and how it can be managed.
